Jabbar Patel

Born in 1942 in Pandharpur in Maharashtra, having taken primary and secondary education in Haribhai Deokaran High School Solapur, he was at first a paediatrician. He founded the Marathi experimental theatre group, 'Theatre Academy', which staged Vijay Tendulkar's Ghashiram Kotwal in 1973 He has worked on the film based on the life and work of Santoor maestro Pandit Shivkumar Sharma.
He is the maker of classics films in Marathi cinema, like, Samna Jait Re Jait (Mohan Agashe, Smita Patil), Umbartha (Smita Patil, Girish Karnad), Simhasan (Nana Patekar, Shreeram Lagoo, Reema Lagoo) Some of his other films are, Mukta, Ek Hota Vidushak, and Musafir(Hindi).
Dr. Jabbar Patel is an acclaimed film maker and theater personality of India. He is best known for his landmark films in Marathi like 'Saamna', And Biopic 'Dr.Babasaheb Ambedkar'. One of his best creations is the late Vijay Tendulkar's play 'Ghashiram Kotwal', which is considered as a modern day theater classic in India. He founded the 'Theatre Academy' experimental drama group in Pune in the early 70s, which has presented some inspiring Marathi plays over the years.
He is the former Vice Chairman of Film & Television Institute of India, Pune & a member on the board of Satyajit Ray Film & Television Institute, Kolkata.
